WHO ARE WE?

The National Pan-Hellenic Council at the University of Maryland is one of 4
Greek Life councils on campus. It acts as the governing body for the 7 active National Pan-Hellenic Council sororities and fraternities at UMD. Eleven students serve on the Executive Board working in close communication with a staff advisor from the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life. If you are interested in joining one of our illustrious organizations, you may access the information for each specific organization on the chapter page of this website.

OUR HISTORY

On May 10, 1930, on the campus of Howard University, in Washington D.C., the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) formed as a permanent organization with the purpose and mission of “Unanimity of thought and action as far as possible in the conduct of Greek letter collegiate fraternities and sororities, and to consider problems of mutual interest to its member organizations.”

The NPHC was chartered by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. In 1931, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., joined the Council. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., joined in 1937 and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., completed the list of member organizations in 1997.

OUR VISION

To aid in developing long lasting relationships among individual chapters, to offer a safe environment for the discussion of issues that are of importance to individuals of each organization, and to coordinate programs that serve a common interest to the members of our fraternities and sororities.
